"Kilpatrick Townsend & Stockton LLP, a full-service firm based in Atlanta whose IP practice is its largest with 300 attorneys, is "very forward-thinking about the adoption of AI tools" and has its own internal tool called Kwery, according to Joe Petersen, a partner in the firm's copyright, trademark and media practice. Simultaneously, it puts its clients' AI policies first and only uses AI on a case if a client consents to it, he said.
Lawyers need to be trained on AI's capabilities, Petersen said, adding that trouble occurs when it's used "to cut corners" that can lead to "disastrous results," such as hallucinated case citations."
